Simple and stylish DIY desk

How to make a desk with your own hands?

When the necessary materials have been purchased and the tools have been prepared, it’s time to decide on the product model. As we promised, we will tell you about the most popular and easy to make.

Made of wood and similar materials

Wooden desks can be made with your own hands from either solid wood or wood-containing materials. Natural products always look more noble and beautiful, but require special skills and abilities in the production process. In addition, they are more expensive due to the higher price of the material. Tables made of MDF, chipboard or furniture board are much easier to process, do not require professional knowledge and are cheaper in cost. We will tell you about both simple and complex ways to make a table with your own hands.

To begin with, we will describe step by step a simple method that even a person who has decided to make something for the first time can cope with:

  • take a drawing of a table made of four rectangular parts. It consists of a cover, two sides and a cross member;
  • let's go to hardware store for chipboard. It is better to immediately buy a laminated board;
  • You can order a cut to size right there in the warehouse, it’s inexpensive, and you’ll bring it home finished parts for your table;
  • if you refused to cut it in the store, put the dimensions on a sheet of chipboard and cut out the parts with a jigsaw;
  • We glue the edge, previously purchased in the same place as the slabs, onto the ends of the chipboard. By the way, if you ordered cutting of laminated chipboard, then you can paste over the edge there. End-mounted using professional equipment, it looks much better and will last much longer;
  • take a drill and drill holes in the end parts - the future legs of the desk;
  • then use a few drills larger size we make a shallow groove over the hole for the confirmation cap;
  • We attach the transverse partition to the side legs with holes so that their upper parts are at the same level;
  • we connect the structure with furniture screws;
  • We place the tabletop on top of the resulting base and also screw it in with confirmations, having previously drilled holes;
  • We close the recessed screw heads with special plastic plugs.
  • Thus, the simplest desk made of chipboard is completely ready. As you can see, a minimum of effort was spent and no special skills were required. Now let's talk about making a desk for a schoolchild with your own hands, the drawings of which you will find at the end of the article.

    Desk model for self-production

    For schoolchildren

    Now let's talk about a little more in a complicated way. But almost anyone can implement it at home. This table is ideal for use by a schoolchild. Detailed instructions on production:

  • we disassemble the old wooden pallet into separate boards;
  • If you have an old hollow door lying around on your balcony or garage, then it will fit perfectly under the countertop. If not, then you will have to cut two sheets of thick plywood to size and join them together in thickness using self-tapping screws and glue;
  • we cut out boards for supports. The simplest and most impressive-looking legs are those shaped like construction “goats”;
  • the height of the supports is at your discretion: from 70 to 80 centimeters;
  • It is better to make the upper horizontal of the trestle the same width as the working surface;
  • the optimal size of the indentation from the edge of the tabletop for attaching the legs is six centimeters;
  • we measure the angle of inclination of the legs, it should exactly coincide with the height of the supports;
  • We install a horizontal block between the upper parts of the legs, having previously drilled holes. We tighten it with drywall bolts. Please note that the holes must be drilled with a slightly larger diameter than the screw itself, this is due to the fact that the legs are at an angle;
  • at a height of about three centimeters from the floor, we screw a wide block (about twenty centimeters), it will significantly strengthen the supporting legs and serve as a platform for the shelves;
  • we attach the last remaining boards from the pallet to the block - the shelves are ready;
  • we take the door and trim the sides with a special edging, it is sold in furniture stores;
  • From the bottom of the tabletop we nail two parallel strips on each side. This is done so that the working surface does not ride on our “goats”;
  • Heels for the legs can be made from wine corks and double-sided tape.
  • We will tell you further how to make a retractable desk with your own hands.

    The perfect DIY desk for a student

    Retractable

    One of the most popular models of a desk is a product with drawers. The modification that we will describe is an excellent example of an expensive desk made of natural wood, made at home. Manufacturing scheme:

  • we buy glued furniture panels, always from hardwood;
  • We take the drawing attached to the article and use it to mark the parts. Do not forget to make a small allowance for the dimensions of the workpieces;
  • We cut eight blanks for desk supports from the purchased shield. Their dimensions are 18x36x570 millimeters;
  • we glue each leg from two parts and secure them with a clamp;
  • we cut out recesses from the inside of all cross members of the product frame;
  • select a long groove along inside tsargi (crossbars);
  • on the upper side of the supports, using a chisel and a hacksaw, select a ledge to the height of the notch in the cross member;
  • We drill two holes for dowels in the sides of the drawers. Their diameter is eight millimeters;
  • insert pencils into the holes and apply them to the legs to mark the place where the dowels are inserted;
  • we connect the base and supports using dowels and wood glue;
  • While the base of the desk is drying, we cut the tabletop and the top cover of the superstructure;
  • select the grooves for fastening the upper right part. This operation is performed using a router. The width of the grooves is ten millimeters;
  • We cut out the side walls of the superstructure using a jigsaw according to the template. All cuts are thoroughly sanded;
  • we also select grooves in them;
  • we cut out the parts for the drawers from ten-millimeter plywood;
  • glue them together and strengthen the fastening with small nails;
  • We attach a facing board, previously cut from wood, to the front part. We secure it with small self-tapping screws;
  • From all the prepared parts we assemble a desk with a superstructure and drawers. We coat all workpieces at the fastening points with wood glue. Leave the product until completely dry;
  • we attach the tabletop to the base with legs using dowels and glue into the folds we cut in advance;
  • After that, all that remains is to select the fittings for the drawers and varnish the table. Please note that we apply varnish in two or three layers, but apply each new one after the previous one has dried.
  • This solid wood desk will definitely not leave your guests and household members indifferent. And the price will cost you four times less than what you bought in a store.

    Photo of a handmade desk with drawers

    The corner desk is one of the largest and most functional. In addition, it usually takes up unused area of the room, freeing up space for other furniture. Here is a short description of making a simple corner desk:

  • we buy sheets of MDF or laminated chipboard and ask in advance to cut it right in the store according to the drawing attached to the essay. Any shipping department of a construction supermarket provides this service for a relatively low price;
  • we connect the side walls with the drawer using dowels coated with wood glue (PVA, familiar to us all from childhood);
  • secure with clamps;
  • We nail the back wall made of fiberboard with small nails;
  • Do not forget that we clean all visible sections of MDF or chipboard with sandpaper and glue them with an edge. As we already wrote above, such a service can also be ordered at a construction hypermarket;
  • mark the underside of the tabletop for the place where the dowels are attached;
  • we drill holes for them, but so that they are not through, but remain deep enough;
  • coat the dowels with glue and place the top cover on them;
  • After drying, turn the product over. Our corner desk is ready.
  • Now you know how to make a corner desk with your own hands, it’s time to study drawings with dimensions, diagrams and useful photo and video materials.

    DIY desk drawings

    With add-on

    With drawers

    The following video will tell you how to make a desk with your own hands in three parts. And the first of them is devoted to the manufacture of countertops:

    It's time to take up the drawers and the leg, which is discussed in the second part of the video on how to make a desk with your own hands.

    When a child goes to school, parents try to buy him a desk where he can do his homework. But furniture is expensive, even if it is for children, and you can spend a huge amount of money on it. But it’s quite possible to do it on your own and make a wonderful desk with your own hands, where your child will be comfortable to sit and study. Familiarize yourself with the manufacturing technology.

    Desk - types and manufacturing technology

    Before you get started, you need to know how to make a DIY desk. There are many options, you will need to settle on one.

    • The straight table is more popular; many parents choose it for their schoolchildren. To make such a table, you must follow a certain sequence. First you need to decorate the ends and only then the tabletop. You cannot make mistakes when making the ends, otherwise it will be impossible to assemble the entire structure together. Follow the proportions shown in the drawing strictly. As for the size, it should correspond to the age of the child.

    • When there is not enough space in the house, you can make a corner desk. It is enough to adapt one corner of the room for this, but you will have to tinker with its manufacture. Therefore, it is advisable to order the cutting of chipboard or MDF boards in order to assemble all the parts later.

    • Sometimes the spaces we live in are so small that it can be difficult to fit anything in there. In this case, you can make a folding table that can be adapted for other needs. When the table is not needed, it is removed and does not interfere in any way with free movement around the room.

    • You can even form a desk from a window sill. In this case, the window sill space is dismantled. A tabletop is placed on its surface. It is advisable that the size of the tabletop be larger than the window sill itself. You can put cabinets or metal racks down so that they support the entire structure.

    • Transforming tables are also very popular now. After all, they can serve several purposes at once - a place where various kinds of things for school and workplaces schoolboy. This table is constructed from a cabinet onto which a tabletop is attached. To make it more convenient to use, you can equip the structure with wheels. This way you can build a bed or a wardrobe with a retractable table.

    There are many options for desks: you can attach it to the wall or hang a cabinet with a retractable tabletop.

    If you want your table to look presentable as a piece of furniture, choose noble materials such as solid ash or oak. Remember that wood reacts to changes in humidity, so take this into account when choosing a particular material. Before starting production, it is best to draw up a sketch.

    For the model to be ergonomic, you should adhere to following parameters: table height should be 800 cm, width - 1500, depth - 700 cm. The side drawers should be about 330 wide, their height should be 300 cm, the height of the central drawer should be 150 cm. It is better to purchase all materials in advance.

    Creating a desk yourself

    Let's try to make a regular desk with drawers and two cabinets. First you need to make the tabletop. Prepare the necessary material: solid wood, chipboard, MDF board, laminate board. You can also adapt the tabletop of an old product for this, just don’t forget to give it an attractive appearance.

    In addition, prepare other materials: a 40 mm block, small pipes, glue, tape (edging) to form the table frame. Don't forget about the table drawing to ensure all proportions are maintained. The size of the product must be suitable for the student who will work on it.

    Transfer the drawing to the materials and you can start manufacturing. A jigsaw will help you cut out all the necessary elements.

    Work progress:

    • Connect the ends to the inner sides, do not forget to use wood glue to process the ends, this must be done. Screw in the screws, but try to work carefully so as not to spoil the appearance. The ends are secured with dowels and grooves.

    • You can attach a board to the back to make the entire structure stable.

    • Attach shelves where the cabinet will be.

    • Use self-tapping screws to attach two partitions in the niche to make it convenient to install the tabletop.

    • Install the tabletop using dowels and grooves.

    • To make it convenient to stack things on the table, you can make additional elements– compartments and recesses and provide them with the tabletop. If you plan to place a computer on the table surface, then attach a podium to it for installing the monitor.

    • Use decorative edging to trim the contour of the tabletop.
    • You need to make guides in the cabinet so that you can equip it with drawers. All you have to do is insert your drawers into the cabinet after fastening them together. Drawers should be made of the same material as the countertop. It is also necessary to make guides on the sides of the drawers.

    If you are making a classic desk, you will need to attach the ends to the inside wall first and then work on the tabletop. You must first make holes for the legs. The upper ends should not be allowed to be at different levels.

    The corner desk is made a little differently. The guides should be attached to the side of the posts. Attach the back board with self-tapping screws. Markings are made on the tabletops, then the cabinets and back wall are attached to them.

    The folding design is made of two children: a table top and a folding gusset with hinges. The table top can also be supported by legs.

    If the desk is being built from a window sill, then you must first prepare a tabletop from an MDF or chipboard panel. They will need to be adjusted to the length of the window sill. You should also take care to create a convection current. To do this, you will need to know the size from the window sill to the heating radiators in order to make holes in the panel.

    A metal profile curved to 90 degrees will help attach the panel. By using polyurethane foam the cavities under the countertop need to be treated, the joints are treated with sealant. The support is placed at the corners and secured with self-tapping screws.

    The work is not finished yet. When you make a desk, you need to take care to give it an attractive appearance.

    Decorative table decoration

    Tabletops made from wooden material, need processing, otherwise it will be inconvenient to work with it. Use drying oil and stain to treat the surface. Before covering with this material, the surface must be thoroughly sanded with sandpaper with a grit of at least 180. At the final stage, paint with varnish.

    If you want your countertop to look natural, use materials that imitate wood surfaces. Some people prefer to place a sheet of glass on the surface of the countertop to improve its performance.

    Little children especially like it when the table has original decoration. You can make its surface striped. For this you will need tape. First, paint the entire surface of the table with light paint. Cover the table with strips of tape and paint the areas where there is no tape with darker paint. Then remove the tape and it will be striped.

    The surface of the table can be finished using decoupage technique. To do this, you will need to cover its surface with various paper pictures or other material. This way you can make a real work of art.

    When you make a desk yourself, involve your children in this activity. They usually enjoy creating with their parents and can be great helpers in this endeavor. In the process of work, they learn not only carpentry skills, but also perseverance and concentration.

    Your table will become a wonderful decoration of your interior and a place where the student will work and do homework. In order for your project to be a success, you need to try hard and first study all the nuances of the work and only then get down to business.

    It is not very difficult for an experienced craftsman to build a desk with his own hands. A person less experienced in the art of working with wood has to limit himself to the simplest models possible.

    In this article, we have collected several solutions that are very easy to implement, from which you can certainly choose a feasible option.

    For schoolchildren

    After a child goes to school, parents are faced with the question: where will he do his homework?

    A very laconic desk, the diagram of which is shown below, would be perfect.

    The advantages of the model are:

    • extreme ease of manufacture;
    • compactness;
    • convenience.

    There is only one drawback - the design does not provide drawers.

    You can make the option in question from:

    • Chipboard (at least 16 millimeters);
    • furniture board.

    Its dimensions are as follows:

    • table top – 1.3 by 0.6 meters;
    • drawer (internal strut) - 1.17 by 0.4 m;
    • sidewalls - 0.74 by 0.45.

    Confirmats are used for assembly. If you do not have a suitable tool for cutting the slab (a jigsaw or circular saw), then order it at a hardware store.

    All workpieces will need to be trimmed along the end with a grinder. The edges of the chipboard must be covered with a special tape before assembly begins. It starts with marking the sidewalls. On each one you need to make two holes 2 centimeters from the back of the product. Similar holes are drilled in the drawer. The distance between them is determined by retreating 50 mm from its edges. Fastening is done from the outside of the sidewalls with confirmations.

    The resulting base is placed on an inverted tabletop. The elements are fastened together with standard furniture corners using short self-tapping screws.

    If desired, it is not difficult to modify the described desk with your own hands. You can add, for example:

    • bookshelves;
    • monitor stand;
    • drawers.

    Before starting work, you just need to draw the most accurate sketch and decide on all the dimensions.

    We use the window sill

    A tabletop made of solid wood or chipboard installed along the window is a great space saver. This option is extremely easy to implement and does not require the purchase of a large amount of materials.

    In addition to saving space, it is also possible to reduce electricity costs, because the work surface is wonderfully illuminated naturally. In addition, studying at such a table is a real pleasure - there is always the opportunity to admire the view.

    The only inconvenience here is the presence of a radiator; it will probably get in the way. On the other hand, there is a plus: your feet are always warm.

    To make the model in question, it is enough to cut the lid to the size of the existing window sill with an extension towards the room. The outer edge is rounded so that sharp corners didn't interfere. This tabletop is shaped like the letter “T”.

    If you can remove the old window sill, it is not difficult to build a retractable table based on the same design. In this case, they additionally make another cover according to the dimensions of the opening and install it so that under it there is a gap sufficient for the free movement of the tabletop. In this case, the last
    it is necessary to provide steel guides (as for a drawer) - their stops will prevent the working surface from falling out completely. This design allows you to create a very wide table that can easily accommodate many of your essentials.

    The legs are made of ready-made steel, with adjustable height.

    Corner option

    This type is also very compact, and at the same time its surface has a considerable usable area.

    As you can see from the photo, its design is extremely simple and no special drawings are required. The dimensions of the tabletop are selected based on your own needs and based on the availability of free space.

    In fact, only 4 chipboard parts are needed here. It is advisable to make the lid from a 20 mm thick plate, and the retractable panel for the keyboard from 16 mm.

    In addition to the material, you will also have to buy:

    • three steel legs;
    • two drawer guides.

    We cut out the lid according to this pattern (or select another more interesting design).

    The sides of the retractable panel (its dimensions are 60 by 45 cm) are made according to the following dimensions:

    • length – 45 cm;
    • width – 10.

    They are attached to furniture corners after installing the guides.

    At the last stage, the legs are screwed on. They are installed at a distance of 15 cm from the edge of the table.

    Hanging table

    This model is suitable for small apartments. Its production requires only 6 parts:

    • table top;
    • 5 brackets.

    The convenience of the table is that, in principle, it can be any length. All that is required is to add a few more fasteners.

    An interesting option in a constructivist style

    The desk described here is a designer desk. It was invented by American furniture makers Henry and Charles Green about a hundred years ago. At that time, constructivism was a very revolutionary style, which has remained relevant to this day.

    In fact, this project is quite complex to execute, but experienced craftsmen are quite capable of handling the task. The model in question consists of a large number of parts made from solid wood.

    Please note that the dimensions in the diagram are indicated in inches, so to avoid mistakes in the future, convert all values into centimeters. This is not difficult to do - just multiply each number by 2.54.

    Despite the fact that this table seems fragile, its design features allow it to withstand very heavy loads, mainly due to the prefabricated tabletop.

    Also note that the drawer is not equipped with any fittings (in principle, there were none in those days).

    Instead of an afterword

    If you have an old table that has lost its appearance, but is still strong, it will be easier to update it than to bother with building a new one. If there is no choice, then, of course, self-production– a worthy (and, importantly, inexpensive) alternative to ready-made furniture.

    Creating a desk with your own hands is quite simple if you have the skills to work with wood, raw materials and tools. You can make a product using standard drawings or come up with your own, original design. If you have an old table, there is no need to make a new one - there are many ways to restore it and make furniture modern look, for example, decoupage. Decor old furniture- the simplest and cheap way get an aesthetically attractive piece of furniture. At the same time, it will be unique.

    Table made of wood materials

    Above are drawings of the simplest product. This is a desk that is usually made from chipboard. She demands minimum quantity time, effort and materials.

    Before making a desk with your own hands, you need to prepare the following materials and tools:

    • Several sheets of chipboard 20-30 mm thick. It is necessary to purchase them in such a way that you can make 4 canvases (1400x600, 450x1300, 750x500 mm - 2 pcs.) with minimal costs.
    • Furniture edge. Sold in rolls, very cheap.
    • Saw or jigsaw.
    • Furniture conductors.
    • Hardware – bolts and nuts or dowels.
    • Wood glue or PVA glue (if dowels are used).

    Using the drawings, creating this table is very simple:

    1. Preparation of parts
      • Cut canvases required sizes. When cutting, it is important to hold the saw at a maximum angle - this will avoid chipping. If you are using a jigsaw, it is better to set it to minimum speed.
      • Make holes for the bolts in them. To do this, it is worth using a furniture jig - it will allow you to clearly observe the location, so during assembly there will be no mismatches between the holes between the legs, tabletop and lintel. You can also connect the table parts using dowels.
      • Finishing. Laminated chipboard does not need to be further processed, but non-laminated chipboard must be opened with varnish and special protective compounds. The operating procedure is indicated on the substance label.
    2. Assembly.
      • When using bolts, no explanation is required.
      • When using dowels, it is necessary to install the part in one of the holes, having previously coated it with glue. Then the parts are knocked together using a mallet. You can use a hammer, but in this case you should hit it through thick rubber or a wide board.
