Let's look at decoupage of ceramic tiles in detail. First of all, clean the tiles from dust and residual adhesive or grout. If the tiles have been in use for a long time, then completely remove all dirt. Be sure to degrease it, otherwise the glue will not adhere to such a base.
On glossy tiles, the top slippery layer is not removed. However, if you want to increase the reliability of adhesion of the decor to the base, it is better to rub the glaze with fine sandpaper. Make sure that there are no deep scratches on the surface or chips.
If you plan to work with paper, dilute PVA with water approximately 1:2 or 1:3. Cut special blanks into parts that you plan to attach to the tile. If you are using multi-layer napkins, separate the colored part.
So, a master class on applying paper decoupage:
- Apply the prepared pattern to the surface of the tile “dry”. Adjust the position of the decor.
- Using a flat brush, pick up a small amount of glue.
- Apply the composition to a napkin and spread it over the surface, gently smoothing the paper. Do not rub in the same place for a long time, as the thin napkin tears easily.
- To minimize the number of folds and wrinkles on the paper, start working from the center of the drawing, gradually moving to the edges.
Main stages of decoupage
If you want to decorate the surface in the bathroom with fabric, the principle of performing the work will be the same as when applying paper. First, cut the shreds. If the material is fraying, apply a small amount of glue to the edges. First, lean the design against the tile. Then use a brush to work the product from the center to the edges. In this case, the glue is not diluted. While it is not yet set, adjust the position of the fabric. Make sure there are no wrinkles left.
This decoupage takes several hours to dry. Then check the quality of adhesion of the materials by smoothing the surface with your hand. Naturally, decorating the bathroom does not end there. Care must be taken to ensure that the design does not become wet, dirty or peel off. To do this, a layer of varnish is applied over the decoupage.
To preserve color, choose formulations without oil additives. Water-based acrylic is a good option, but pay attention to the degree of resistance of the coating to abrasion and moisture. For reliability, the varnish is applied in two or three layers. It will additionally fix the decor on the tile. It usually takes at least a day to dry the surface.
To extend the life of such decoration in such a capricious room, regularly wash off dirt from the surface. If left uncared for, dust will settle on the varnish and grease will eat into it. Removing such contaminants is much more difficult. If you damage the drawing, do not despair. Correcting any defect in decoupage is simple: glue the damaged part or replace it with a new one. As a last resort, delete old decor and apply other material.
Old ceramic tiles in the kitchen are not pleasing to the eye. The desire to change it does not arise immediately, because this is a rather complicated process associated with dismantling the old cladding and laying a new one. This will take more than one day, and the kitchen itself will take a while minor repairs their operating mode will be released. Execution technologies

Today, a very popular technology that combines tiles treated with decoupage technology and tiles with a relief front side in a single section. That is, there are actually a huge number of options as such. As mentioned above, you just need to turn on your imagination.
In principle, decoupage itself is not a complicated process, because it is just an appliqué. Therefore, it requires very simple tools and materials. This is a brush, glue, the application itself and varnish, which will be used to cover the front side of the ceramic tile as a protective layer.
Very important point- This right choice adhesive composition and varnish. They must easily withstand humidity and temperature changes. In addition, the varnish must have sufficiently high strength, because anything can happen in the kitchen. Moreover, the tiles will have to be periodically cleaned of dirt, which means they will be exposed to some household detergents.
As for the tool, it is better to choose a flat brush. It should not be too hard; you will still have to varnish the paper or fabric appliqué. And here caution is required. The brush should not be too wide, but you should not choose a small tool either. In the first case, it will simply be inconvenient to work. In the second, it will take a lot of time.
To decoupage wood or other materials, PVA glue is usually used. For tiles it is better to buy special composition. It’s called “decoupage glue.” Although you can dilute it with PVA varnish.
Ceramic tile decoupage technology
First of all, you need to wash the tiles from dirt, after which you need to wipe them with alcohol, that is, degrease them. Now you need to sand the glossy surface with fine-grained sandpaper. It is very important when performing this operation not to cause deep scratches on the surface of the tile. There is no need to talk about chips. That is, the plane of the tile must be flat.
Now we need to prepare the glue. If PVA is used, then it must be diluted with water (1 volume) and varnish (2-3 volumes). The mixture must be mixed well, it should be homogeneous. Now we need to prepare the stickers. They can be ready-made (sold in stores) or you can do it yourself.
Now the sequence of the decoupage process itself.
- It is necessary to apply the napkin to the front surface treated with sandpaper. Secure it.
- Use a brush to pick up a little glue.
- The fastening composition is applied directly to the napkin; it must be distributed evenly over the entire plane. The most important thing is not to rub the brush in one place for a long time and with pressure. The napkin is too thin, you can make a hole in it.
- You need to start distributing the glue from the center of the picture to its edges. This minimizes the appearance of folds and wrinkles on the surface of the tile.
If, instead of a paper napkin, fabric is used to decorate the tiles, then, in principle, the technology is exactly the same. But there is also a nuance. After the front side of the ceramic tile is completely covered with glue, you can move the application further, precisely aligning it to its planned location. This can no longer be done with a paper napkin. In addition, to glue the fabric, you can use pure PVA glue without diluting it with water and varnish.
In general, it is easier to work with fabric. But some of its species become shaggy when pruned. This problem can be solved - you just need to treat the edges of the flap with the same PVA glue. After drying everything will be fine.
So, the napkin or fabric is glued. You need to give time for the glue to dry. But to reassure yourself, check that everything is securely connected. Just run your hand over the drawing. If a piece or edge of the applique does not come off, then everything is normal. Now, so that the pattern laid on top of the tile does not get wet, dirty or peel off under the influence of negative factors microclimate in the kitchen, it is necessary to cover it with a protective clear varnish. It is better to apply the varnish in two or three layers, and each layer must dry before applying the next one.
As for the choice of varnish, experts note the good qualities of the acrylic-based material. But when buying, you need to pay attention to its qualities such as wear resistance. The thing is that tiles covered with decoupage must be periodically cleaned of dirt, oil and grease. If this is not done on time, then its front side will begin to fade under layers of dirt. And, as practice shows, it will be much more difficult to get rid of them if they are absorbed into the varnish layer.
As you can see, making your own decoupage of tiles in the kitchen is not so difficult. In any case, anyone can master this technology. But, as in any delicate matter, care and caution are required here. Especially if napkins will be used to decorate the tiles. They are thin, so it won't be that difficult to damage them.
Everyone who does decoupage has encountered the problem of the absence of that same motif on napkins or decoupage cards.
There is only one way out - print!
The printout has one, but significant drawback - it is thick
The paper used for printing cannot be used for decoupage without processing. Today we will thin it out in different ways experimentally!
There is one completely civilized and tested option - the use of a special varnish medium or the so-called transcryl transfer varnish. I didn’t have it, hence this experiment;)
1. To begin with, I decided not to waste time on thinning - print the desired picture on a napkin. I read a lot of advice and...
I took one of the three napkin layers.
I smoothed it out with an iron.
I secured the napkin with masking tape on a regular sheet of office paper (as if I wrapped it in a napkin, gluing its edges with tape at the back; some advise doing this with PVA glue rather than tape, but it makes the napkin wet and you have to wait for it to dry; I didn’t like it). The printer will not be able to print on a napkin without a backing; it is too thin.

Result: the paper is stuck, the napkin is partially torn and wrinkled. For comparison, above is an image taken with special paper for laser printer.
This is the printer I have. Canon LBP 5050.
But I didn't give up! I decided that it might be that the sheet of plain paper is quite soft and this causes the napkin to wrinkle when printing. I decided to give it a second try (my husband was not very in favor, because there was a risk of losing the printer;)):
I took colored cardboard and wider masking tape, secured the two edges at the back, and
the other two are on the front side so that the surface “wrinkles” less.
Everything went like clockwork.
But it's far from photographic quality.
Conclusion 1: It is possible to print on a napkin using a laser printer, under certain conditions, but the image is not very bright and is not comparable to printing on other paper. Can be used for backgrounds, borders, but not for the main motif, of course IMHO!
P.S. When printing on an inkjet printer, the napkin gets wet and breaks into small flakes; not all printers survive such experiments!
2. OK, then we’ll experiment with printed on special paper for laser printers!
A. We use another acrylic varnish instead of transcryl!
I chose 4 acrylic varnishes from what was available in my household and covered four identical prints made on hp 150 g/m2 laser printing paper in two mutually perpendicular layers with intermediate drying.
Option 1: Acryl Mattlack, Hobby Line, acrylic matte varnish
Option 2: Glassy water varnish, Esprimo, Ferrario
Option 3: Aqua parquet varnish, Dufa (I use it for varnishing products, it dries well, glossy, easy to apply)
Option 4: Glossy acrylic varnish, Olki
I put the prints with varnish in water for 20 minutes.
Option #1:
1 option: the surface in some places became covered with pimples after soaking
I picked up a thin layer of varnish in a corner and began to peel it off, at first everything went fine...
But then it turned out that part of the motif was not incorporated into the varnish properly and indecent bald spots appeared on the peelable film.
Option 2: the surface after soaking is smooth and shiny!
The film comes off great.
The image is clear and solid. The downside is that the edges become wavy and bend, which makes life very difficult when gluing.
Option 3: the surface is quite smooth, everything is ok.
The varnish film came off perfectly, the only pity is that there is no image :)
Option 4: surface with whitish streaks from varnish:(
The film is removed well, but the previous minus covered this plus!
Conclusion 2: If you don’t have transcryl on hand, it can be successfully replaced with Water-based glassy varnish, but when gluing special attention should pay attention to the edges! IMHO!
b. We will thin out the printout without additional funds.
Blanks for thinning. I specifically took the photo to look at the quality of the resulting image.
Option #1: Thinning with tape!
Option 1: Take regular transparent tape.
Paste it onto the back of the printout and press it carefully!
Carefully, prying it by the corner, remove the tape, and with it some of the unnecessary paper.
The paper has become 2 times thinner!
Another layer of tape.
The result is pleasing; the image has become translucent. The reverse side is smooth, it only took four “depilations”, I was afraid to do any further because... After the third time, the tape was quite difficult to remove, risking damage to the image.
Option #2: Soak!
Option 2: soak the printout for 10 minutes.
Using a needle, we separate the layers and try to remove the unnecessary paper, trying not to damage the layer with the image.
It turns out that this only works up to a certain point. The paper is torn.
When you try to “roll” the middle with your finger, the image soaked in water also tears:(
Option #3: Spray only the back side!
Option 3: spray the back side of the printout with water, being careful not to wet the front side.
Straighten the paper and spray again.
When trying to remove the dry color layer, the image began to tear :(
Then I started simply rolling the wet paper onto the back of the print with my finger.
The process is fascinating, not complicated, the paper rolls up beautifully, thinning the image.
The result is pleasing!!! The image is thin, almost transparent. After drying, the remaining “pellets” on the back side can be carefully removed with sandpaper. She can also go around the edges, making them even thinner.
It’s just better to roll the paper on a flat, level surface, otherwise the surface texture will remain in the picture, like mine
Option #4: We thin out right in the water!
An attempt to roll up the paper from the reverse side directly in the water. No chance:(
Conclusion 3 and final: IMHO!!! It is most convenient to work with a laser print without additional varnishes, simply thinning it by “rolling” the paper from the back side of the image Reverse side You must first spray with water!!! Hooray!

The second version of the decoupage technique for the bathroom

- Prime the surface of the tile with acrylic paint or PVA glue. You need to take twice as much acrylic substance as glue;
- After the first layer has completely dried, apply another one and let it dry completely again;
- Sand the rough edges (you can use sandpaper);
- Dilute PVA glue and water in proportions 2:1 (one part water to two parts glue), cover a flat surface and lay a paper napkin, a cut-out design on tracing paper or even fabric;
- Let the glue with the pattern dry and cover with a final layer of PVA and water.
All that remains is to varnish all the beauty and, after drying, begin further work on installing the cladding. Method of applying an image to a surface
The surface of the tile must be dry and free of dirt and dust. This is especially true for the wall in the kitchen, which has already been in use for some time. The tiles need to be degreased. This can be done by wiping it with alcohol. Only on the prepared surface will the fragments lie flat.
If you cut the pattern with scissors, it should be the same size as the tile. When using napkins, it is better to tear off the sample.
If you cut out a pattern you like with scissors, it is better that its size matches the tile. Decoupage masters advise not to cut out the sample, but to tear it off. A design with a jagged edge on a smooth surface will look like it was painted with a brush. This technique is especially applicable to napkins. It must be remembered that if decoupage paper or a printed image is used, it is glued entirely. Only one layer on which the print is applied needs to be separated from the napkin. The remaining layers will not be needed.
In order for the fragment removed from the napkin to lie flat on the tile, without creases, use an ordinary document file. The element must be placed face down on the plastic. To make the soft texture of the napkin stronger, you can first lightly spray it with hairspray. The sample on the file is placed under a thin stream cold water so that it gets wet. You need to keep the entire structure level so that the image does not move or become wrinkled. The next step is to transfer the picture to the tile. A wet cloth will easily stick to the tile. You need to apply it with the back side, smooth it with your hands or a roller, then remove the file. The picture will remain in the right place.
PVA glue, if it is very thick, should be diluted with water in a 1:1 ratio before application. Using a flat brush, spread the adhesive liquid over the surface of the design. When the fragment is saturated with glue, it is allowed to dry. If you really want to continue working, you can speed up drying with a hairdryer.
Fabric and patterns on tissue or decoupage paper are glued differently. They need to be greased with glue and, having been attached to the wall in the kitchen, carefully straightened with a roller or brush. In this situation would be better suited acrylic adhesive for glass and ceramics. The final step is to apply several layers of varnish. Varnish at least twice. The next coating is applied after the previous one has dried.
Tile tiles can be used as an additional decor acrylic paint and water-based contours. Paint the edges of the tiles.
