How to make soft letters. DIY crib pillows for newborns. Constructing a donut pattern

In design modern interiors Beautiful three-dimensional letters and even entire inscriptions are very popular. They serve as an effective decorative element and bring a little warmth and comfort to the house. This can be the initial letter of the name or the entire name, or just beautiful words.

Today I'll show you step-by-step master class on sewing soft three-dimensional letters-pillows from fabric, from which we will create a cozy home word Home (home). If you have sewing skills on a sewing machine, then creating such an original piece of furniture with your own hands will not be difficult for you.

You will need:

  • textile;
  • padding polyester;
  • needles, threads, pins, scissors, pencil, sewing machine.

1. First we need to make a pattern for the letters. To do this, on the computer in Word program select the “insert” function of WordArt and type the desired text. Then we stretch each letter onto an A4 sheet and print it on a printer. You will get a template like this.

2. Now cut out the letters and apply the pattern to the fabric folded in two layers. I used scraps left over from curtain fabric. For convenience, I pin each letter, trace it with a pencil and cut it out.

3. After the letters are cut out on the fabric, measure out the side strips that will give the letters volume. I cut out strips 9 cm wide. I measured the length of the strips approximately, applying them to the edge of the letter, since the strips are different for each letter.

4. Once everything is cut out, you can start sewing three-dimensional pillow letters. To do this, from the wrong side along the edge, use a sewing machine to sew side stripes on both sides of the letter. We do not sew the ends of the strips yet, leaving small hole to turn the letter right side out and then stuff it with filler.

5. For example, this is how I got the letter N. As soon as both sides of the letter are sewn, carefully turn it inside out through the hole left.

6. After the letter is turned right side out, fill it tightly with padding polyester, and then manually sew up the hole with a hidden seam.

7. Please note that the most difficult thing when sewing three-dimensional letters from fabric is sewing letters that have a closed hole, such as O, A, B, R, D, B, Yu, F, b and b. The fact is that inside these letters you need to sew a side strip from the wrong side only on one side. Otherwise, you won't be able to turn the letter out. Look at the photo below to see how the letter O was made: I sewed the inner hole only on one side and turned it inside out.

8. Then I filled the letter O with padding polyester and, having pinned the hole with pins, sewed the strip to the remaining side by hand using a hidden seam.

9. We make the remaining letters M and E according to the same principle as H: we sew it, turn it inside out, stuff it with filler and manually sew up the hole.

10. Once all the letters are ready, you need to thoroughly steam all the seams on them using an iron or steamer.

They look great on the back of the sofa, and my sweet HOME has become even more cozy. I hope this tutorial inspires you to create your own favorite words. It's so cool to decorate your home with your own hands!

How to sew three-dimensional letters?

Today you will see the process of sewing three-dimensional letters from fabric. These letters will be an excellent accessory for a photo shoot. We thank Irina for the detailed master class (at the end of the article there is a link to the original source).

To make three-dimensional letters you will need:

Letter template;

Two types of fabric;

Dublerin/adhesive interlining;

Sintepon;

Sewing machine, thread, needle, pins.

Volumetric fabric letters step by step:

To begin, print out a letter of the size and shape that suits you. In this case, the size of the letter is 19x19 cm (photo 1-2).

To create a three-dimensional letter you will need two types of fabric - for the “front part” and for« sidewalls» (you can also make a single-color letter). It is advisable to pre-compact the fabric with doublerin or adhesive interlining (photo 3-4).

Then transfer the letter pattern to the wrong side of the fabric. Width« sidewalls"in this case it will be about 6 centimeters - in order for the letterwas quite stable(so that sheit was possible to put) and had a pleasant “plumpness”. Leave seam allowances 0.5-0.7 cm (photo 5-7).

Take one "front piece" and a side piece, and fold them together with the front pieceseach other, stitch in a circle, not forgetting to make notches in all convex/concave places. Start stitching from the lower center of the “crossbar” of the letter A, so that later when sewing this seam will be less noticeable (photo 9-12).

Next comes the most unpleasant moment of the work - sewing in the inside of the letter. To do this, measure the length of the inner hole using a thread or cord, and with an allowance of 1-1.5 cm, cut a piece of the required size from the remaining sidewall. Sew the piece along the sides and the resulting« pipe"Then sew in by hand or by machine. At the end you will get a workpiece like the one in photo 13.

Then you need to stitch the second half of the letter in a circle (photo 14-15). And turn it out through the inner hole (photo 16-17).

Next comes filling the letter with padding polyester or holofiber. It is better to take a synthetic winterizer of medium thickness (the 100th or 200th is more tenacious and becomes quite rigid during subsequent steaming), thanks to which the letter will have"pleasant heaviness"and keeps its shape well (photo 18).

Lock « inner donut» pinsAnd sew with a hidden seam.

Pillows in the shape of different letters or whole words are a popular trend nowadays that can decorate a child’s or adult’s bedroom, and become an original gift for any holiday.

An original home decoration in the form of three-dimensional pillow letters is very popular among needlewomen.

Today we are sewing a personalized letter pillow.

To make soft letters-pillows will require the following materials.

  • Fabric - you will need enough of it to cover the front, back, and sides of the future pillow. If all parties are different colors, then appropriate textiles will be required.

The material must be resistant to wear, since in a children's room the pillows will experience a lot of stress.

  • Threads - they are used to sew individual parts manually or on a machine. The seams are made internal, invisible or decorative, which are an independent decoration.

The threads need to be selected as close to the color of the fabric as possible.

  • Filling: padding polyester, foam rubber, holofiber, cotton wool.

Filler for pillow letters.

  • Decor – colored yarn, bows, ribbons, iron-on stickers, beads, rhinestones, etc.

Accessories for decorating pillow letters.

The tools you need are a pencil, a ruler, paper for patterns, chalk, which will be used to trace patterns on the fabric, sharp scissors, pins for connecting individual parts before stitching, sewing needles, and a measuring tape. The latter can mostly be replaced sewing machine, an overlocker, which is used to sew seams. Decorative embroidery performed both manually and by machine.

As a base, it is better to choose fabric with patterns in the form of stripes, polka dots, flowers, etc.

Ready-made pillow letter templates can be downloaded from the Internet, enlarged, and printed. The easiest way is to draw all the necessary graphic editor“paint”, adjusted to the required dimensions. Products of any height are suitable for gifts, but for interior decor, and even more so for sleeping, the letter is made at least 50 by 35 cm, the width of each “leg” is 10-15 cm, and the thickness is 10-13 cm.

Letter-shaped pillows must be voluminous, so it is advisable to prepare several types of fabric: for the base and for the sides.

It’s also easy to draw letters for pillows by hand - it can be a single letter or a full name. To transfer the template to the fabric, the latter is folded in half “face” inward (if both sides are made of the same textile) or two pieces of different material are placed on top of each other.

If there is a limited amount of material for making personalized pillows, you should use a pattern of the appropriate size.

When creating side parts, you need to measure all sides of the patterns with a ruler (for “angular” letters) or elastic measuring tape(for rounded, “caps”).

Similar decorative elements used in professional family photo sessions or simply decorate a stylish home.

What fabric to take for sewing

Many woven and non-woven materials are suitable for a soft pillow letter:

  • cotton;
  • felt;
  • wool;
  • flock;
  • silk;
  • fleece;
  • flannel;
  • faux fur, etc.

If you choose a thin material, be sure to glue it with non-woven material.

For small products, pieces of fabric left over from sewing a dress are used, bed linen, baby diapers. The material is selected depending on the purpose of the item and the design of the room. Children's letter pillows are sewn from soft flannel, flannel, denim, corduroy, or knitwear are suitable for gifts for teenagers.

On the first try, understanding how to make a pillow in the shape of a letter with your own hands will not be difficult even for inexperienced needlewomen.

A classic or baroque interior will be decorated with pillows made of tapestry and velvet; linen is suitable for country, and leatherette is suitable for loft.

Pillow letters in contrasting shades will help you place the right accents in your interior.

How to Prepare to Create Name Letter Pillows

To give the birthday boy not just one soft personalized letter-pillow, but a complete “pillow name”, you will have to work hard.

If the letters are placed in specific room, you should take into account the prevailing tones there.

How to make cute letter pillows step by step.

  • Create a sketch - the “writing” of letters can be different. Some amateurs do not perform them separately, but cut out a whole word from fabric, which requires special skill.
  • Based on the sketch, develop a full-size drawing.

First, on paper, draw a pattern for a pillow of the size we need and transfer 2 parts in a mirror image to the main fabric.

  • Cut out individual parts - front, back, sides from paper, cardboard.
  • Transfer the elements to the fabric, cut it, not forgetting the seam allowances of 1-2 cm.

Then, from the wrong side, we sew the side strip, first to one main part, and then to the other.

  • Fasten with pins or carefully sweep away the parts, leaving space in the lower back part for inserting the “filling”.

We leave a small part unstitched (to turn the pillowcase right side out and fill the pillow with filling).

  • Turn the product inside out.
  • Start stuffing - cut out letters from foam rubber according to existing patterns or carefully distribute pieces of cotton wool, padding polyester, or sewing waste inside the pad.

Fill the pillow with filler.

  • Use a neat hidden seam to secure the hole through which the pillow was stuffed.

Sew this hole by hand.

  • Start decorating - embroider congratulations, flowers, butterflies on the surface, sew on bows, colored buttons, stick on doll eyes, sparkles, etc.

If you plan to create a whole name or any other word from hand-made pillow letters, it is advisable that all the letters be the same size. Machine embroidery is only possible on fabric, not on finished product. For thin textiles that do not hold their shape well, interlining is placed on the wrong side.

Before you sew a letter pillow with your own hands, it is important to decide on the nature of the inscription.

Tip: For letters of simple shapes, such as “G”, “C”, “O”, “E”, etc., removable covers with a “zipper” are sometimes made.

Letter pillow as an element of room decor

Soft textile alphabet is an excellent educational game for kids and their room decor. Sofa cushions must be made bright, soft, pleasant to the touch - they should not deform when compressed. Floor products are made dense due to more paddings. Developmental, sensory items are stuffed with buckwheat husks, decorated with bright buttons of different colors and shapes, and soft stars, hearts, and other figures are sewn onto them.

Sewing pillow letters is profitable and fresh idea for home business.

Large letters that will stand vertically are additionally provided with a cardboard or wire internal frame. Small letters are made hanging - you can put bells inside, which will ring when swinging on strings.

You can also use different ribbons to decorate the pillow. Try tying them into a beautiful bow and attaching them to the item.

An “adult” interior with letters-pillows is more strict - the material used must be in harmony in color with the furniture upholstery, curtains, and other room textiles. A word made up of several elements is placed on a shelf, bed, or back of a sofa. The letters have the same color, texture, or alternate different colors through one.

After mastering a detailed master class, you will learn how to sew beautiful, voluminous and soft letter pillows.

To decorate romantic interiors, lace and fringe are inserted into the seam of the letter - this should be done at the stage of basting the product. For warm Scandinavian interior individual parts can be knitted or crocheted from colored yarn according to pre-made patterns.

Products must be combined with wallpaper or furniture.

Tip: Sometimes the letters are made with the seams facing outwards, which are decorated with bias tape to match the product or with a contrasting one.

Conclusion

Sewing pillow letters with your own hands is not at all difficult, having minimal seamstress skills, the simplest materials and tools. New, detailed master classes tutorials on making such gizmos appear daily on the pages of online magazines, as well as printed publications on handicrafts. Cushion numbers and even simple hieroglyphs are made in the same way.

Other shapes can be used as a souvenir: stars, crowns, flowers, numbers, clouds, etc.

Master class "Textile volumetric letters-pillows"

This type of activity is suitable for students high school who are interested in arts and crafts.

Appointment of the master class: show all the necessary operations for creating volumetric decorative pillows of complex shape.

Target: create voluminous decorative pillows of complex shapes (letters).

Tasks:
1. develop the ability to sew voluminous products
2. form aesthetic taste.
3. create an atmosphere of comfort in the home.

IN lately Television often shows programs and films in which the interiors are beautifully decorated with decorative pillows in the shape of the letters of the names of the characters.
Today, I want to show how such voluminous decorative textile pillows are made.

We will need:
1. letter patterns
2. fabric
3. decorative cords
4. satin ribbons of different colors
5. threads in the color of the fabric
6. glue gun
7. pillow filling
8. scissors
9. sewing machine
10. hands
11. needle
12. patience
13. neatness

The process of creating decorative volumetric pillows

1. Using a computer, a text editor and a printer, select a font for the text of future pillows and right size. (I advise you to use simple fonts, sans serif and fairly bold, thin letters will not be stable and beautiful). This way our pattern will be ready.

2. Take our fabric, in my case it was a simple calico, the denser the material, the wider the range of possible pillow fillings (even cereals and fabric scraps). We bend the edge of the material along the grain thread to the height of the cut, it is better if all the letters fit in 1 row. So, they will look more harmonious when combined.

3. Using chalk, we outline the outline of our letters; if possible, you can pin the fabric with needles so that when cutting out the letters, the layers of fabric do not separate and the letters are perfectly even. For each letter we need 2 back sides, which will be mirror each other, so that on both sides of the pillow the fabric is on the front side.

4. Now we need to prepare the side lines that will create volume for our pillows. We make them 5 cm wide. The length of these lines depends on the size of the pillow and the number of bends in it (i.e., on the complexity of the letter).

5. We begin to baste our patterns. Place the front side of the letter and the side tape right sides together (it’s better to start from the bottom so that the seam connecting the ends of the tape is not visible until the pillow is turned over). First we baste these 2 parts on all the pillows, trim the corners so that nothing is pulled and sew them on a machine with 3 mm stitches, turn them inside out, check that all the seams are sewn (if you don’t have a machine, you can do it with your hands, using the seam forward with a needle).

6. If in your word that you are sewing there are letters that are difficult to sew (a, b, c, d, o, r, f, b, y, b, yu, i), containing internal elements, then you need to baste in the second turn the internal element, using the same side stripe for it. After basting, we sew this layer on the machine. Here you need to be as careful as possible to place the element on the letter with the right side. If there are no such elements, go to point 7.

next otherwise the letter will have to be completely new.

8. After our letter is sewn, it needs to be turned out and filled with filler (sintepon, paralon, synthetic fluff, scraps, cereal, etc. depending on the thickness of the fabric, the filler can be different, the main thing is that it does not show through the fabric and did not spoil the appearance of the letters).

9. Now we return to complex letters again, we need to remember that if a letter is complex, then it has an internal element through which our letter must turn inside out. This internal element is sewn to the back of the letter by hand and this is done as a last resort, after the letter has been turned onto its face and stuffed with filler.

10. We sew up all our seams left for turning and stuffing, using a hand needle and thread.

This is what our semi-finished letters look like. Now it needs to be decorated and prepared for interior decoration.

11. Using decorative cord (you can use other types of decoration for seams) and a glue gun, we hide all the seams of our letters. (Note: I always hide the seams of the decorative cord using a satin ribbon or bias tape that matches the color of the cord.)

12. Now, using a satin ribbon, we add playfulness to our letters and you can put them on a sofa or shelf, or you can even give them to a friend (as I did).

Ready-made pillows

Letter pillows can be called a recent trend. However, there is something to love about such interesting products: they are creative, bright and, of course, useful. Would anyone refuse own name, cutely laid out in the form of letters on the sofa?

By the way, you can collect and arrange not only your name, but also the names of children, relatives and friends, and even pets. Whatever your imagination and creative spirit allows you to do.

Interested? Then we suggest you plunge into the world of needlework and still find out how to sew letter pillows with your own hands.

Preparing materials

In order to create such beauty, you will need quite ordinary and standard materials:

  • directly the fabric from which the pillows will be made;
  • threads;
  • filler;
  • scissors;
  • pins;
  • pattern paper;
  • chalk, soap or a simple pencil (to create a pattern);
  • ruler or measuring tape;
  • sewing machine.

Letter pillows must be voluminous, so you need to take several types of fabric: the main one (for the front and back sides of the future pillow) and the side one (for the side parts of the pillow).

As for the colors, the fabric can be very different: plain light or dark, or bright, with variegated patterns and extraordinary prints. Be guided your own desires, the sensations and interior of the room in which the pillows will be located - you can’t go wrong.

The threads must also match the fabric in color, otherwise you will end up with something very strange and not entirely beautiful. As a filler material, you can use cotton wool, synthetic winterizer (it has proven itself to be quite good filler) or pieces of fabric, if you have a lot of them and nothing else is available. In this case, be prepared for the pillows to be somewhat loose or too hard, and in some places to be empty.

Once all the materials are collected and you are charged good mood and optimism, you can get to work.

Sequence of work

In order to sew a letter pillow, you first need to draw this letter. On paper we draw a pattern of the selected letter and then transfer two such details to the main fabric, of course, in a mirror image. If you are not good at drawing, then simply print out the letter of the required size, cut it out and also transfer it to the fabric. Don't forget about seam allowances either - 0.7 cm or 1 cm is enough.

From another fabric you need to cut strips for the side of the letter. The length of such a strip is the diameter of the future letter (it’s better to make it longer; the rest can always be cut off), but the width is calculated using the following formula: letter width + two seam allowances.

Once the fabric has been cut, you can begin assembling the parts together. First you need to sew that same side strip to the front of the letter. You can do this with threads (basting), or you can use pins for chopping. In external corners you need to carefully cut the side fabric, and the main fabric in the inner ones. Don't forget about stitching the details.

If the selected letter contains a hole (O, A, P, Z), then the side strip of fabric will need to be sewn to the edge of this hole. If the letter does not have a hole, we begin to sew on the back of the letter (we use pins again, cut the corners and grind down the parts). We sew everything on a machine, carefully and slowly.

After this matter is finished, the letter can be turned out. Next up is the filling process. This must be done carefully: the filler should be in all parts of the letter, especially in the farthest corners.

After the pillow has turned into a large, soft and voluminous thing, the hole left for filling must be sewn up with hidden stitches. Final stage— steaming the resulting pillow. The best way to do this is with a steam iron. It will take a long, long time until the letter takes on a marketable appearance.

Ready! If you did everything correctly, then you have a bright, soft and very cute pillow letter.

If you still missed something, we suggest watching an instructive video.

Happy crafting!
